On Monday, June 7, I tried an Intro Mat Pilates class at Power Pilates in Midtown. It was a small class with only four women, including myself. The small size allowed for our instructor, Megan, to work with us individually on the moves that needed correction. This was a great class for any beginner! It really focused on the basics and terms of Pilates. The class was 45 mins long. With having numerous knee injuries, I could still partake in this class with minimal difficulty. If there was a movement that was uncomfortable, Megan was very helpful in recommending an alternative. This class is great if you want to work out your abs and legs! One class and I can already feel the burn! I would absolutely recommend this class for anyone just starting out!
Having only taken pilates classes through gym institutions I opted for a beginner level at Power Pilates. The instructor explained that this intro mat pilates class was typically crowded, but we lucked out on a semi-private session (i.e., no opportunities to cheat on the exercises) and said she gave us more advanced exercises than a typical intro mat class. After taking this class I think I could have handled the open mat class, but the personal attention was beneficial to cleaning up my form and placement. I would advise intermediate level students to take this class once to fine tune their practice and then move onto the open mat class. The studio was beautiful (i.e., chandeliers in the dressing rooms) and the staff could not have been nicer or more accommodating. They even gave me two free passes for future mat classes.
An Open Mat Class is slightly daunting for a Pilates first timer because it is designed for those who are at an intermediate or advanced level of practice. However, Power Pilates still made it an inspiring fitness experience. Upon entering the class, the instructor, Vanessa, asked if there were any beginners and advised me that I should consider taking an Intro Mat course. I quickly discovered the motive behind that statement when she began to ramble off pose names that although I did not understand, I was able to execute simplified and modified versions with her encouragement and aid. Every pose she explained as thoroughly as possible in the short amount of time and I felt myself connecting with the exercises and my core within five minutes of the class. The instructor was attentive not only to me but also to the more advanced practitioners as she kept us focused and corrected form and breathing. Someone with an advanced level of fitness maybe able to keep up and quickly assimilate to the Pilates environment but I would still suggest at least one intro class in order to acquire a better knowledge of foundation and Pilates classical language.
